Organic Modeling: Modeling a Simple Dog

Section 1: Modeling the Basic Shape

  1. To Start out modeling our basic dog we're going to begin with the default cube that Blender offers on startup. There're a couple things we need to do first before we really get down to modeling the actual dog, though. The first thing we're going to do is enter Edit Mode by hitting the Tab-key. The next step is to select the entire cube by hitting the A-key (once or twice, depending on the previous selection. Note: the cube should now be yellow.

  1. With the cube selected, from front view, (Numpad 1), hit the G-key to activate grab mode and move the cube to right while holding down Control such that the left side of the cube is centered within the viewport.

The next couple steps are what will allow us to work on only one side of the model rather than having to model both sides independently of each other.

  1. First we need to delete the inside face on our cube. To do this deselect everything with the A-key (the vertices at the corners of the cube should now be pink), now hit the B-key to active box selection then Left-Click and Drag over the center vertices so that they're selected. Next hit the X-key > Delete Faces.
  2. Now we can add our Mirror Modifier by selecting it from the Add Modifier drop-down menu. Note: to add a modifier be sure that you're in the Edit Buttons (the one that looks like a square with four yellow dots at the corners, or you can just hit the F9-key).

  1. Before going any farther we also need to click on the "Do Clipping" button in the modifier panel along with the small, grey circle button next to the small up-arrow. Everything should now look like the image below.

We can now begin actually modeling the dog!

  1. We're going to be working in both front and side view a lot so it's best to get comfortable switching views now (the views can be changed by numpad-1 and numpad-3 respectively)! To start off switch to Front-view (if you're not already there) with Numpad-1. We need to move the outside of our cube in towards the center so that our dog isn't too wide. To do this deselect everything with the A-key, then using Box-Select (the B-key) Left-Click and Drag around the outside vertices.
  2. With this vertices selected hit the G-key and move them in torwards the center halfway so that it looks something like the image below:

  1. Our next step is to go into Side-View (numpad-3), deselect everything (the A-key), and select just the back vertices (box-select with the B-key).
  2. We can now begin the real modeling process by hitting the E-key to activate Extrude. When you extrude a face with Blender, Blender automatically puts you into Grab-mode and constrains it to the faces-normal (the direction the face is pointing). So to place the new face anywhere that you'd like you must first Right-Click, after hitting the E-key, and then hit the G-key again to enter Grab-mode. Now you can simply place the new vertices wherever you like! Place the newly extruded portion of the mesh slighty to the left and down. This will be the neck of our dog, while our original cube is the head. Note: should all be done in Side-View or else it won't look right!
