With this vertices selected hit the G-key and move them in torwards the center halfway so that it looks something like the image below:
Our next step is to go into Side-View (numpad-3), deselect everything (the A-key), and select just the back vertices (box-select with the B-key).
We can now begin the real modeling process by hitting the E-key to activate Extrude. When you extrude a face with Blender, Blender automatically puts you into Grab-mode and constrains it to the faces-normal (the direction the face is pointing). So to place the new face anywhere that you'd like you must first Right-Click, after hitting the E-key, and then hit the G-key again to enter Grab-mode. Now you can simply place the new vertices wherever you like! Place the newly extruded portion of the mesh slighty to the left and down. This will be the neck of our dog, while our original cube is the head. Note: should all be done in Side-View or else it won't look right!
Section 2: Adding Subsurf
January 6: Influence:

First we need to delete the inside face on our cube. To do this deselect everything with the A-key (the vertices at the corners of the cube should now be pink), now hit the B-key to active box selection then Left-Click and Drag over the center vertices so that they're selected. Next hit the X-key > Delete Faces.
Now we can add our Mirror Modifier by selecting it from the Add Modifier drop-down menu.
